Viva Raw LLC is voluntarily recalling a lot of five turkey pet food recipes contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, a foodborne pathogen that can cause illness in both pets and humans.
The recall includes the following five products, all part of Lot #21244, which were shipped to customers between May 16 and June 28, 2024:
- Viva Turkey for Dogs Ground: Lot #21244
- Viva Turkey for Dogs Chunked: Lot #21244
- Viva Turkey for Cats: Lot #21244
- Viva Pure Turkey: Lot #21244
- Viva Beef & Turkey for Puppies: Lot #21244
The lot number of each affected product is printed in blue on the left-hand side of each product’s label. If you find you have products from Lot 21244, contact Viva Raw for a refund by emailing info@vivarawpets.com before safely disposing of the remaining product.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends humans do not touch contaminated food products with bare hands. To dispose, place the contaminated food in a sealed plastic bag while wearing gloves and throw it in the garbage. Sanitize all areas that may have come in contact with the contaminated product.
No illnesses have been reported to date, and although rare, Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in pets. Infected pets may be asymptomatic or display the following symptoms:
- Diarrhea
- Anorexia
- Fever
- Depression
- Shock
- Death
Humans infected with Listeria monocytogenes may experience nausea, vomiting, aches, fever, and diarrhea.
If you or your pet have been exposed to one of these contaminated products, you should contact your veterinarian and/or healthcare provider as soon as possible to prevent the spread of the food-borne pathogen to others.
